“I can do it.”  Four simple words that speak

volumes.  To teach a student that he/she

should and can try anything is at the core

of my teaching philosophy.  My personal

understanding of this philosophy was

reinforced during my time in the Peace Corps

working in rural schools in El Salvador. “No puedo.”

This was a constant declaration that I heard

every day I worked in the schools.  It was there

that I decide to take action.  It was there that

my love of teaching turned into a passion that

has continued to grow as I see my students grow,

take risks and take those steps need to say,

"I know I can."

Welcome to my classroom.  Every student is greeted with the message that he or she can succeed.

Somebody said that it couldn't be done,
But he with a chuckle replied
That "maybe it couldn't," but he would be one
Who wouldn't say so till he'd tried.
So he buckled right in with the trace of a grin
On his face. If he worried he hid it.
He started to sing as he tackled the thing
That couldn't be done, and he did it.

I think I can, I think I can . . . I KNOW I CAN"
