This was an observation of a US History class in which the students were to demonstrate their knowledge of the influence of the Jamestown colony on US history though a focus on major historical figures during the settlement of this colony.  In the selecting of both the formative and summative assessments it was essential to consider the main objectives of the lessons.  The worksheets were designed to guide the students through the reading to find the most relevant information and allow them to be productive members during the group activity.  The final product was a class timeline that chronicled the events of Jamestown through four individuals.  Monitoring was an essential element during both the independent and cooperative learning phases to assess whether the students' learning was aligned with the goals of the lesson.

This fishbowl observation log serves many purposes.  This is one of my favorite activities, both encouraging the students to be oral participants and active listeners.  This assessment requires the student to listen while they are the observes and comment on what their fellow classmates are contributing to the discussion.  This not only assess the students' listening ability for information on topic and relevant but has the added benefit of giving the students a vehicle for peer recognition.  In addition an exit summarizer is added to the bottom where the students must respond with their own opinions on the discussion topic.
